Abdomen Questions

    pain in bowel post op

i had my right ovary removed 3 weeks ago and have experienced a low level constant nagging pain in my lower left abdomen which i thought was maybe my bowel. this has been happening since day 5 post op but i have had regular stools and urine since the op with no obvious changes in bowel movements - i.e. no runs or constipation. i have also intermittent bouts of sharp labour like pain with nausea which is like waves of pain and my abdomen becomes hard. this lasts about 2 hours and then my abdomen and the pain reverts to normal. I have had an ultrasound to determine the cause which they thought was gynae but havent found anything yet. I have also had internal and external examination of wound site. Could it be a bowel perforation or would they have found it out by now?

i have a problem with my stomach

In the last year I have been having recurring stomach pains. The pains are so bad that i am often in tears and they can last for hours at a time. They happen every couple of months and appear to be unprovoked. Recently i had one throughout the night which left me doubled over in pain and sweating. I have talked to my GP about this who suggests it could be very bad heartburn but the pain is worse than that. What can it be?

    Abdominal pain

I have been experiencing abdominal pain and discomfort, for the past 7 days. The pain is not persistent but comes and goes. It is anything from a dull ache to a stabbing pain, predominately located in the lower left abdominal region. During this time I have also noticed a change in my bowel habits. My stool is often soft and pale in colour. Along with this I have noticed quite a lot flatulence, audible bowel sounds and in the past 48 hours constipation. There is NO evidence of blood or mucous in the stool. I am NOT feeling fatigued or is there any weight loss. I have not changed my diet or eating any new food stuffs and I do not have any allergies. Please can you advise further. Many thanks.

    Liver not well visualised?

What can this mean? After a recent CT scan of my abdomen/pelvis consultant has written saying scan 'showed nothihng worrisome down in pelvis but CT doctors want an ultrasound for a closer look at my liver as it was 'not well visualised'. What may the reasons for this be? I thought CT scans were better at visualising things. I now have an ultrasound appointment.

    Post-Operative Infection

I had my appendix removed on 19th July. I am a well controlled T2 diabetic. During the op my bowel was damaged (a cerosal tear, which was repaired), the following day I was getting increasing pain in the wound and my right side (towards back). I was initially treated for a chest infection with IV antibiotics, despite having no symptoms of a chest infection. Needless to say I was getting worse, not better, had no appetite, was feeling very sick, in severe pain and bed bound. There were clear signs of celluitis in my right side showing at this point. On 24th July two consultants had a 'discussion' about me. One wanted to continue just with the IV antibiotics, the other wanted to take me to theatre to have a look at what was happening...he won the arguement! I was returned to theatre on 24th July and treatment commenced for necrotising fasciitis. The surgeon drained 3 quarters of a pint of pus. I was taken to ITU and was being ventilated. I was returned to theatre the following day for further debridement I am told. I am still recovering following 2 ops for this and a short stay in ITU. I now have a VAC Therapy dressing, which obviously restricts normal life! I'm trying to understand how I could have gone from being realtively well to getting this infection, all whilst in hospital. Unfortunately my hospital team are less than helpful in answering my questions, just saying "these things happen". As it turns out my appendix appeared normal after the op in any case!! My wound was not dressed after the initial surgery, just stitched or whatever and then I was on the ward. I'm wondering if this have increased my risk of this infection. I don't really know about how or why I got this infection and if anything could have reduced the risk. It seems as if there is this period of my life which is missing and I'm trying to piece it together and fill in the gaps. I was discharged from hospital on 30th July. At one stage I even had a microbiologist come to see me in hospital and he told me it was e-coli...yet according to my consultant nothing in my notes suggests this??????????? Thanks in advance for any help and clarification you can give.

    Fatty liver and other difficulties

Dear Doctor My name is ******. In September 2010 I was diagnosed with high cholesterol and I was given statin by my GP. But in Late March, 2011 I was feeling panic disorder, sleeping problem, weakness and blurred vision and at one stage I was forced to move my home back from UK. That time there was sweating in my palms and legs and felt weakness and was admitted to hospital straight from airport. In the hospital I was found elevated ALT 133 and AST 58 and mild fatty liver. But all other in LFT were normal Since then I am taking Vitamin E and Ursocal and bromazepam for sleeping disorder. The ultrasound says the size of my liver was 16.4 cm. That time my TBC result was as follows: Haemoglobin 12.8 gm/dl. HCT 39.3% MCH 25.4% WBC 8.6 Neutrphil 50.7 % and Lympocyte 42.1% (20-40) range Total cholesterol was 207, HDL 38, LDL 143 and Triglycerides 171 mg/dl Yesterday I have got my new ultrasound and LFT test..it says liver size is 15.2 cm. ALT 60 and AST 30 but in TBC lymphocytes are 51% (20-45 range in different lab) and Neutrophil 37% And in the lipid profile Triglycerides went up to 220 Is my liver is improving? what is the cause of high lymphocytes? I cant sleep at night often it comes in the morning...I am too much weak and have problem in difficulties to see in the evening...My weight is also loosing now I am 67 was 69 in March. Though I am taking low amount of food. Please advise me. Should I take statin? I cant tolerate it. Any other medicine instead of statin to control cholesterol?

Gallbladder problem with episodes of shaking all over with no fever or temperature.

Hello! I've been diagnosed with multiple gallstones and am awaiting to see a gallbladder specialist. My symptoms are abdominal bloating, terrible sore right shoulder(which when sore brings on nausea) and terrible nausea. The question I need some guidance on which is causing me great distress,is to do with me also having these horrific shaking and aching episodes all over my body but esp behind my knees and biceps. For example,I took a Canestan tablet and they brought on this awful ful like shaking do,took me a 2-3wks to regain full strength.I then took a Metrocloprimide tablet for the gallbladder sickness and that gave me an horrendous reaction.I had fever like symptoms without getting temperature...I couldn't stop this shaking and then it dies off slowly. Behind my knees were that sore that I couldn't lie down. I went to my GP and he ruled out H.Pylori via a sample(before I found the gallstones). He then thought I had a gallbladder infection and the remaining aches from this last Metoclompride via taking ciprofloxacin seemed to be helping. Last week he gave me Erythromicin to try cos I wasn't fully right, and I HAD THIS HORRIFIC REACTION TO IT.The nausea, shakes and aches were horrendous.I went to A+E and have only now just got out. It's saturday now and I still don't feel like eating.I'm just concerned I have 2 seperate problems here when I want my gallbladder to be it all. A further scan proved my gallbladder is diseased and there was a thickening of the wall of it. My massive anxiety however is that nobody, none of the doctors could understand this awful flu like shakes and aches...and knee soreness. I asked if it could be an infection and they said you dont have a temperature so I'm scared this aches and shakes aren't to do with that.As I write this, the aches and shakes aren't as bad as they were but I defo still have them. My blood tests at the hossie didn't show anything but the one at my GP's prior did show I have bile going into my blood but the hospital thought nothing about this when I asked.I'm scared to try any tablet in case this reaction occurs. Not sure my GPs know what it is and when i see my Gallbladder Specialist in a week or 2,i greatly worried he'll say he's never heard of it.Oh and I had slight ketones in my urine being a diabetic but a nurse said she didn't think it was that! Worried it could be pancreatic infection(being a diabetic),worried it's a liver issue.....Epstein Bar Virus? This is not cos I'm anxious either,I defo have a problem here but worried like I say,it's not all gallstone/bladder related. Just feel like no one is listening to me and worries me that a few docs at the hossie didn't seem to know it.Can u have a gallbladder infection without a high temperature? Could it be ME even? Any reassuring ideas and info would be great! ***** *******

    Liver blood test

My 38 year old daughter has a baby of 6 months (he's being breastfed) and a toddler of 2 years. She has recently had a liver blood test which has come back slightly low. She was told that it could be lower because she's recently had a baby, so her doctor wants her to get another test in a month. Could having a baby have this effect on her liver? I'm worried it's something more serious.

    Abdominal Pain

My question is related to abdominal pain. I am 26 year-old male that never had any major health problem. I do not smoke and nor drink very often. Back in June I had diarrhea and once woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain in my lower-left abdomen (the pain eased a bit when I changed position). I drank lots of water and after about 30-40 minutes the pain subsided and I managed to go back to sleep. As in the following days I still had pain (but much lighter) I thought I had appendicitis or something related so I went to the doctor who recommended a blood and a stool test. The stool test results were OK (so there was no blood in the stools) and the results of the blood test were also OK with two exceptions: creatinine that was slightly below the normal levels (it was around 55 when the normal levels are 60-120) and ALT that was higher than normal (it was around 100 when the normal levels are 10-40). The doctor told me that when you a do a single blood test ALT can be higher than normal and as I was getting better we thought it was from something I ate so nothing to worry about. The doctor also asked whether I am intolerant to certain foods and I told him that if I am I am not aware of. Throughout the summer I only had mild abdominal pain now and then but in late September I had moderate pain in the lower-left abdomen also during the night but not as strong as before. However, in early October I had severe abdominal pain both on the left and right sides at night for about 3 hours, much stronger than before. The pain then eased and I managed to get some rest but the next day about 30-45 minutes after I ate something (mainly after breakfast and lunch) I had moderate to severe pain mainly on the lower-right abdomen (the pain was worse with sudden movement). I also noted swelling in the lower abdomen (both sides) and in a couple of occasions had watery stools. I only had a soup for dinner and then the pain eased in the following days. Last weekend it came back, moderate pain in the lower-left abdomen for almost 3h during the night and it took a few days to get better (I had watery stools on five occasions last week). Sometimes I notice some blood in the stools but it is related to hemorrhoids (I apply Scheriproct ointment to relieve the pain). As this comes and goes I don’t whether it is something serious that I should worry about. Let me just say that throughout the whole period I tended to go to the toilet at least twice a day (sometimes four times a day!) and had excessive gas. I also noticed a swelling of the intestines that sometimes causes discomfort and from time to time I find it difficult to start urinating and/or urinate too often. Also, although I try to eat healthy, once or twice a week I have fast food, mainly pizza. Should I be worried about this? The doctor said at the time that he may need to look at my stomach and intestines (i.e. perform a colonoscopy). Do you think this is necessary? As far as my job is concerned, I am researcher so I always under pressure although I am not feeling additional pressure right now. Thank you.

    gall bladder / immune system

About 3 years ago I had my Gall-bladder removed by keyhole surgery; my tummy button wouldn't heal properly and I needed 3 courses of Flocloxacillin. One year later I took Pneumonia and was diagnosed with Bronchieatasis, 6 months later I contacted the Noro Virus and lost 6 lbs in a week. Recently I had a Cuticle infection and was told by a Locum doctor that it was called Paronychia which was the result of a Staph infection which had entered my blood stream. Now the antibiotics which worked well for me in the past don't anymore - or have such extreme side-effects that I am forced to stop taking them eg. my sinuses become inflamed and flow continuously. Could the removal of my Gall-bladder have affected my immune system or it is likely that I have picked up an infection during my initial surgery. I am a 65 year old female who although being diagnosed with mild M.S. 17 years ago it has never caused me any problems.

My grandfather, was he denied the right to live as long as possible?

On 9th June 2009, my 74 year old grandfather was admitted into hospital with Painless Yellow Jaundice, the following day he had a US which revealed a 4cm malignant tumour in the head of the pancreas blocking the bile duct. It also revealed that the liver was almost completely replaced by multiple lesions. Kidneys fine. Spleen fine. A later CT scan confirmed the cause of his painless jaundice was Carcinoma of the pancreas and Liver Metastasis. All other organs were clear. I was told by the doctors as my grandfathers next of kin that the plan was to insert a stent into the bileduct to get rid of the jaundice the fluid (Acities) and then he would be put on an intensive course of chemotherapy. 5 days in, his procedure was cancelled once due to his RNR not being correct as he was on Warfarin for AF (His only current medical condition). Once his RNR had been corrected, his ERCP was cancelled twice again due to apparent emergency cases. An extraction of fluid was performed in the ward to check that the Acitites condition was not infection. Results confirmed it wasn't. However, due to the fluid and fluid issues, he suffered renal failure. I was fighting and fighting to get his treatment but I didnt succeed and on 24th June 2009, he died. I feel so upset and angry he wasnt given the oppotunity to live, and yes I accept he would of died from this agreessive disease however, his symtoms would of been drasticly reduced and his death alot more peaceful that it was. I want to know how the stent and chemo could of impacted and if there was a chance in anyones proffesional opinion? I have complained and had all his medical files out to be told that of course, they did everything above board and emergancy proceedure got in the way. Surely he was an emergancy I ask myself? Can anyone shed some light on whether he had a chance and what benefits these treatments would of had and if there is anything they can comment on what I have said. Also, the staging of his cancer huge obviosuly, he never had any symtoms at all as I lived with him, he just had jaundice and then 14 days later died! Im really puzzeled. Thanks
