I keep ripping a tendon (I think) in my lower legs - what to do
I am a utilitarian runner: I run back from work as a way to commute 4-5 days a week at 5 miles each run. I have been doing this for c. 5 years. However over winter I have been unable to run as I keep tearing the tendons that join my calf muscle to my ankle (I am no physiologist, so I might be wrong about the tendon).
The first tear/strain came in October in my right leg and I took 2 weeks off. When I restarted I was fine for 2 weeks. Then my other leg (the left one) had a really bad tear below the calf muscle and I didn't run again until Christmas. I then tried a short run and it pulled my right calf muscle! After another 2 months of rest I set off for another run and this time my left calf muscle/tendon tore.
After each tear I walk gingerly for a week, then can walk normally (almost), but if I stretch my gait, e.g., through running or 'Dad dancing' with my kids, then I feel a sharp pain as if I am tearing, or at least pulling a muscle.
I think I have eliminated shoes from the problem as I tried 3 pairs and settled back into the pair I used for most of the 5 years. I am 37 and have not changed my diet or felt ill or different in any other way. My running style and routine and number of runs was pretty constant before the first injury.
I realise the best thing to do is go see a doctor or maybe a sports injury person, but before I do thought I check to see if there is anything obvious I am missing.
Thanks

I have a swollen and slightly painfully foot
Banged my shin 6 weeks ago. Still a little lump there. 1 week ago started getting slight pain in foot at top. Very local. 1 week later general swelling on top and lower part of foot. Not too much swelling. Sore to touch foot. Ankle still feels a little tender, but no pain. Foot is ok when rest, but painful when put shoes on. Just wanting to check out as started 1 week ago. Foot is tender. Not aware of banging foot.

For my husband - very sore big toe
My husband over the last couple of years has sporadic gout in his left toe which I usually cure for him naturally via cherries, celery etc and it goes within a couple of days. He has developed a very sore toe in his right foot but it does not look like his usual spell of gout. It is not red and burning. At the outside of the toe and alongside the base of the nail there is a small bony part (painless usually) not swollen. However, this has got much bigger and is hard and yellowish. This is swollen and the swelling and yellowish colour runs around the toe and across to the back. There is no cut not oozing just swollen and this colour, but it is extremely painful and making it hard to walk on. I tried the cherry treatment as that usually gets rid of the gout, and also he has tried an antiflam which he has off the doctor for a back problem, again this usually sees off the gout rapidly - but its not happening. On googling pictures, it looks rather like a callous on the side of the toe view - what do you think. Many thanks.

Arthritic pain non responsive to NSAIDS
Hi
My grandad has chronic knee pain associated with arthritis as a result of a knee injury many years ago combined with osteoarthritis. He is currently taking NSAIDs (diclofenac), lansoprozole, GTN, simvastatin, aspirin and a beta blocker. The NSAIDs just don't work for him and this is having a significant affect on his quality of life. Viciously independent and 91 years old this is so important to him but he is in constant pain.
As a nurse I seem to be the only person he will 'listen' to and the only member of the family who will strongly advise him on anything without fear of offending. I feel that there is more his GP could do if he were to just ask. I want to be clear in what I am advising. Am I correct in my thinking and what kind of pain relief would be available to him?
Many Thanks

Orthopaedic Question about Joint / Meniscus damage and Osteoarthritis
Subject:
A 52 year old male - 6’2” – Morbidly obese at 205 kilos
– History of Joint problems, advanced osteoarthritis in left knee
– No MRI scan before injury, but while subject had issues with both knees before injury, His right Knee always gave him more problems than his left knee
-MRI scan 18 months after injury shows: Degenerative tear posterior horn medial meniscus
My Question:
1.If the subject had a weakened, not torn, medial meniscus before the injury could the injury have torn the miniscus
2.If the subject had a weakened, slightly torn, medial meniscus before the injury could the injury have made the tear in the medial meniscus worse
3.If the subject had mild osteoarthritis in left knee before the injury and it was suggested the recovery time from the injury would be a year, and it was later found the subject was then found to have advanced osteoarthritis in left knee, would the recovery time be more or less than the year which was originally suggested.
4. Considering the Subjects history of weight and joint problems – would the kind of injury the subject sustained have a long term affect, eg Could the injury make the patients osteoarthritis worse
5. The subject had an arthroscopy, cleanout and the miniscus trimmed – could the subject have problems because of this operation, with the loss of some of the miniscus etc.

Coping with pain
For the last two days I have had a severe pain in my right hip especially first thing in the morning it also goes across my groin. I have had arthritis diagnosed in my lower back facet joints and injections in these joints last year did not help. The right calf muscle was painful with a swollen ankle, which I still have, a about a month ago and I was told it could be a refered pain from athritis of my knee. Unfortunately I am unable to tolerate Ibuprofen because of stomach ulcers in the past so I am having Tramadol at night and Paracetamol in the day. I was so depressed that I stopped the Tramadol since then I have had flu symptoms diarrhea and a bladder infection. Now I have this pain in my hip I wonder what I can do to help myself whether a T.E.N.S. machine or a massager would be of any benefit. I am trying to keep moving as I am told that by moving I can make the pain in my back better but I am at my wits end to know what to do so I would appreciate some help please.

Arthritus
My father is 84 and has arithritic type pain in both knees. This is a great shame as it limits his mobility and dispurbs his sleep yet he is otherwise in good health. His doctor refuses to prescribe anything but Paracetmol. I have suggested Diclofenic (which I am on and they work well) but he says my dad is too old for these. Any ideas? I want to give my dad the best possible 'quality of life'.

Pain in Left Foot, walking with a limp
I'm a 36 year old female, not overweight, and in all other ways healthy and active, but for the last 10 weeks, I have had quite considerable pain in my foot and have been walking with a stick. The pain is on the inside of my foot about an inch below the ankle joint. There seems to be a lump there that is very painful to touch and the pain is there every time I take a step. Its a burning, pinching pain and has not let up once since it started. Usually I'm active and walk briskly each day, but now can't do anything other than limp. I should add that my job involves me standing all day and I have done this for years. I have seen my doctor, who thinks I have may grown extra bone, but I am waiting for a hospital appointment.
