High Blood pressure and swollen legs
My 70 year old mother has developed increasingly swollen legs and ankles over the past few years to the point where she is now quite severely disabled and barely able to walk at all.
She was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid gland and also high blood pressure some 15 or so years ago and put on the following medications:
Bendroflumethiazide (diuretic)
Atenolol (betablocker)
Lenothyroxine (thyroid regulator)
Pravastatin sodium (lowers cholesterol)
About 8 years ago a medical revealed a mild leaky valve in her heart which has been monitored for a while and told that it is not that significant and requires no treatment.
Her weight has started to increase quite rapidly due to her increasingly sedentary lifestyle and tendency to overindulge so I would put her in the obese or borderline morbidly obese category now. She certainly sounds very breathless after even a very short walk. She describes the sensation of her legs "giving way beneath her" sometimes.
I am trying to understand what the major underlying cause or causes are of her condition. Clearly there are many factors going on though the swelling in her legs seemed to appear after going on the blood pressure medication. Personally I believe that she may not have initially needed the blood pressure medication since she suffers with "white coat syndrome" and her blood pressure was recorded on single assessments. I feel she should have been monitored over a longer period and offered lifestyle and alternative treatments first rather than going immediately for a drug treatment but that is an aside and we are too far down the road to hark back on that!
She is reluctant to see anyone about her problems as she is afraid of what might be suggested but I would like to know if you feel there is anything that could help her situation. There are obvious ones such as losing weight of course that needs to come from herself though without guidance on this I can't see her dieting on her own.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Blood Pressure Mediction
I have been taking propranolol (40mg X 3 Daily) for many years from my UK GP for anxiety attacks. I am spending an extended visit to Thailand as I do every year. During this visit I decided to visit a local doctor to get myself checked out as I was started to feel lethargic and get regular hot flushes and headaches. I had my Blood suger and blood pressure checked. The blood pressure was very high but the blood suger was ok. I had allready been monitoring my bllod pressure in England by visits to occupational health and my GP, it has been generally going up to reach its peak at 186/117.
The doctor over here prescribed Anapril 5 (Enalapril Maleate ) 5mg, twice a day after meals. Also Felotan ( Felodipine 5mg ) Once a day, and Aspririn 81mg Once daily. This has brought down my bllood pressure to 142/98 last check.
The problem is, I was unable to get the Thai doctor to understands why I was taking the Propranolol or if it was safe to continue taking it with the Blood pressure tablets. So I decided to stop with the Propranolol as I wasnbt feeling anxious over here. However I have since had a scary panic attack for no reason and the old feelings of anxiety are coming back. Can I restart the Propranolol and continue with the bllod pressure medication ?

Blood pressure
I am 81. Over the last 5 years I have been prescribed every pill possible to reduce my blood pressure, which is consistently around 200 over 89,but either the medication doesn't have any effect or it causes unendurable side effects such as acute depression, swollen legs and ankles, etc.etc. My GP says that the latest one prescribed - Nebivolol - is the only thing left to me, but it causes severe stomach upsets. I sometimes think that he thinks I am wilfully producing these symptoms, which I am certainly not. I'd give anything to reduce my blood pressure and worry about not being able to do so. I have an active life and eat the right things in quite small quantity. Without any medication at all, I feel well and much more energetic. What can I do?

Blood Pressure
Hi, I took my blood pressure reading at home as part of a get fit drive as I needed to enter this along with my height and weight onto a website to track progress. I am male, aged 38, 5ft 11 and weigh 14 stone. I do not smoke or drink alcohol and I eat a vegetarian diet.
My average reading taken over the course of a week is 178/119 and I was concered this seemed to be higher than it should be.
For the past 2-3 weeks I have had a throbbing headache when I wake up in the morning and this re-visits me at various points in the day. I had assumed this was due to a dental infection (in my root) but I had the offending tooth out over a week ago but I still have the headaches.
Is my blood pressure too high? What can cause this and should I be seeing my GP about it?
Many thanks

Side effects of blood pressure medication
I have a number of health problems which are concerning me. For the last five months I have been on Tildiem La 200mg capsules and Ramipril 2.5mg for high blood pressure but my blood pressure has not changed much and my GP wants me to try Bisoprolol Fumarate 1.25mg a beta-blocker. I am not happy about taking this medication because I have had dizzy spells and hot flushes and generally not feeling well. I also have arthritis of the lower facet joints in my spine and have been taking Tramadol. At the moment I have a pain inmy left breast which I don't know how to deal with, it has nothing to do with my heart. Please I need some explanations I really want to stop the medication and I have so many different pains and problems they are making me so depressed.
