Loss of balance and double vision

I had a one off episode of double vision 16 years ago (a whole day) then nothing for 10 years just before I was diagnosed diabetic. I then started getting edging of objects (a vertical false image) and a little bit to the left. This is now increasing gradually and mainfests itself as, for example, the roofs of buses and cars appearing twice and also appearing to jump up and down. I have also had problems with my balance (stumbling) almost always to the left but sometimes to the right. Although I have never fallen over I have stumbled into other people and objects and I don't want to be accused of being drunk, 'high' or being in/causing an accident. An opthalmogist couldn't identify the problem but it still persists. The loss of balance got so bad when I was on holiday recently I had to use a walking stick for 3 days to steady myself. I have stigmas in both eyes and I don't know if this is the problem but there is also a history of multiple sclerosis (blood relation) and I am concerned I may have it too. Please could you advise. Thanks
